What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Will Oldham seems to be churning them out these days... I cant't beleive he has another Bonnie Prince Billy album. Seeing as I've mentioned beards a couple of times this week, I think it would be rude not to give the man credit for the face fuzz he's sporting on the back of the cover. I had a beard for a bit but I was getting my grub all caught up in it like Mr Twit so I had to lose it. Oldham is in full alt country mode here and actually sounding quite up beat and chirpy (for him). A load of his mates turned up for the recordings and brought along Trombones, Piano, organ, fiddle, pedal steel, clarinet and their voices. His brother Paul does the mix.It always amazes me when people are able to work with their siblings without punching each others faces off. Another one for the collection from this unique singer songwriter. 'Lie Down In The Light' is out on Domino on LP and CD.

What the label says:

Domino are proud to release ‘Lie Down In The Light’, a brand-new twelve-song album of excellent new songs and sounds, bristling with guitar strings and laced with harmonies. ‘Lie Down In The Light’ is the ninth Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy album, and his first proper album release 2006’s ‘The Letting Go’. The vinyl is beautifully packaged in a spot gloss sleeve and the CD format features a special coloured tray with a very carefully designed booklet which will delight fans of Bonnie. It is the brightest album to date from the Bonnie ‘Prince.’ Brisk tempos skip among his signature slower numbers and ballads. Bonnie’s vocals are among his most expressive: carefully nuanced, singing all up and down his range, showing him at a judiciously dynamic and tuneful apex. ‘Lie Down In The Light’ features Bonny repeat players Paul Oldham and Emmett Kelly and also benefits from the multi-instrumental presence of Shahzad Izmaily, who works percussion, piano, guitar, banjo and the mysterious, sensual “row of wrenches.” New (duet) partner Ashley Webber forges her own presence next to Bonnie in a pair of fantastic turns. Additionally, some of Nashville’s finest appear in between the band‘s strings and harrows, adding light (and yeah, we see a little darkness too) wherever they appear.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
