Listening to a promo the other week of the latest Daedelus album on Ninja Tune was a real hit and miss experience. sadly The track they've chosen as the single 'Make It So' was one of the weaker moments for me personally but probably the most commercially viable for the label, hence the choice. It features a vocal from Michael Johnson. There's an eighties feel to it with a bit of an Italo disco vibe which I quite like. It's almost heading in a similar direction to the recent Neon Neon album. Comes on 180g wax with mixes from XXXchange, Moonstar and Samiyam. Hats off to Ninja Tune for the quality of vinyl they're using these days.Daedelus links up with Michael Johnson for the kind of happy song / sad vocals mash-down which Alfred Darlington learnt from listening to too much Brazilian music. This, however, is not bossa. Drawing on bits of Italian disco, French house and more than a smattering of early ‘80s English new romanticism.
Then check the remixes. Spank Rock’s XXXchange takes the original and turns it into uproarious house-funk (rather than funky house). Moonstarr turns in a phenomenal remix on a Canadian-Bass-by-way-of-Miami kind of tip. Samiyam, an Ann Arbor native now relocated to LA and regularly collaborating with Flying Lotus, slows things down and chops it up just as you’d expect. Head nod for people with odd shaped heads. Experimental without ever being dry, clever without ever being academic, romantic without ever being soppy, Daedelus is a starship trooper from the past.
