Black Devil Disco Club is back for another cosmic disco odyssey. It's hard to review 'Eight on Eight' to be honest because it all sounds cut from a similar aural cloth to previous album '28 After', a pacey hi-hat led disco beat, burbling synths, strangely morphed vocals, some spectacular 70's style effects that make you think of some shaky sci-fi programme from yr childhood. It's all incredibly rhythmical & authentic sounding as he hasn't really altered the template used for his spectacular debut. I think he's got one of those patented sounds that he's reluctant to deviate from and I don't blame him. It does make me think of the hinterland between Moroder & Yello but with a nice futuristic dancefloor feel ala Legowelt. The production is proper blinding, I reckon this would shit your face off on a big system! So, this is the real deal, funky & plangent unlike all that limp Italians Do It better gear. If you dig him, this will no doubt floor you some more for he's definitely a vital pioneer and this is certainly both cerebral & floor friendly! Cool! CD only so far on Lo, vinyl to come!

OVERVIEW: 30 years, 3 albums. The first in 1978, the second 28 years later and the third in 2008. ‘Eight Oh Eight’ is the third and final part in the Black Devil Cosmic trilogy.

Originally released in 1978, Black Devil's ‘Disco Club’ was an extremely rare disco masterpiece, an epic journey into the deepest electronic disco that has been given a new life by record collectors and lovers of Italo and Cosmic disco sounds alike. The record is credited to Joachim Sherylee and Junior Claristidge, pseudonyms of two French library writers Bernard Fevre and Jacky Giordano and is rightly hailed as extremely important to the rise of the acid house movement and Italo Disco. Original copies are the holy grail of many a crate diggers collection.

Then 28 years later ’28 After’ followed updating and expanding the Black Devil sound. i-D likened it to ‘Lindstrom and Prins Thomas on very evil acid’ whilst Dazed & Confused declared ‘iItalo house archivists will chew their faces off for a copy of this astounding record.’ Championed by lovers of the Nu Cosmic Disco sound such as Prins Thomas, Lindstrom and Luke Vibert as well as Italo Disco masters like I-f, Alden Tyrell, DJ Hell and Alexander Robotnick, Black Devil now unleash the long-awaited final piece to their future disco legacy.

The exact significance of the number eight is yet to be revealed but perhaps we should ask the Chinese. In Chengdu, China the telephone number 8888-8888 was sold for USD$270,723 and next year's Beijing Olympics will open on 08/08/08 at 08:08:08p.m. In the Jewish Cabbala, Eight is the number representing: abundance, authority, leadership, cosmic awareness, prosperity, and infinity. "Seven is heaven, Eight is a gate."

Like it’s predecessors ‘Eight Oh Eight’ features 6 tracks all with the trademark Black Devil sound but now even more haunting and bizarre. If the last album was like ‘Giorgio Moroder meets Joy Division’ then this one is like ‘Salvador Dali meets Cerrone’, surrealistic disco for space cadets.
