What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Mirror Mirror next with an odd 7" of pagan prog psych-pop that would possibly fit nicely onto a record by The Chap or TCFTSIST. It's really quirky, so much so I can't work out if they're taking the piss. I really like the melancholy Pink Floyd vocal harmonies and the choral folk vibe of it all. I also get a healthy dose of the Beta Band but they've got an outsider sound all of their own. See also Gruff Rhys & SFA, 'Silicone Eyes' has that out-of-time uncategorisable beauty to it More pulsing sub-Floyd weirdness on the flip 'Wulfgang Bang' I don't find it annoying however as it's all done incredibly well and manages the feat of being creepy yet fresh regardless of it's retro gazing intentions! Ltd 7" Tough Love.

What the label says:

“They’ve been dancing to their own unfeasibly jerky beat long before it came into fashion” Drowned In Sound. / “Mirror! Mirror! are a schizophrenic mash-up of nearly everything that followed punk and somehow it works perfectly” Gigwise. / Following a  split 7" with Rolo Tomassi and a limited edition tape release earlier this year, Midlands-based 5 piece Mirror! Mirror! issue their double A side debut single proper on 9th June via Tough Love/Holy Roar. With the lyrical tenacity of a young Mark E. Smith and a sonic backing as physical as it is cerebral, Mirror! Mirror! create a bloody mess like an American Apparel sporting Patrick Bateman. With one eye on the dancefloor and the other on your throat, it's wise to pay close attention.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
