What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Is your pint half empty or half full? Well, Halves probably chucked theirs on the fire before smoking a load of fags and staring into the wilderness. They've a CD out in the most gorgeous packaging, one of those releases where you don't actually give much of a damn about the music as the surrounding art is so intriguing and aesthetically appealing! Actually, the music on this EP is like the more sombre, ethereal end of post rock with some engrossing textures, impressive dynamics, some cool electronic flecks & sympathetic vocals. There's also some really sweet neo-classical passages that give the whole thing a real sense of beauty & drama, like a quality Temporary Residence sampler or summat. Such is the diversity & quality displayed on this 7 tracker, if you like your music elegant & stately then this should do you proud! on Hateistheenemy

What the label says:

Halves have developed their live show into something truly captivating; a mix of synched visuals, strings, brass, and electronics, anchored by soaring guitars and live drums. Broadly influenced, they craft intense, deeply resonant sound-scapes, blending a range of instruments – bells and glockenspiel one moment, the piano and accordion the next - over guitar crescendos, haunting strings and both acoustic and electronic drums. Theirs is a rich, multi-layered sound, ambitious, lush and cinematic. Halves were recently invited to perform at the inaugural "Transmission" festival set in a mountain-top amphitheatre in Kufstein, Austria this July. Playing at this year's event are a total of 15 bands, including Mogwai,Efterklang, Spiritualised and Talvin Singh. Halves are delighted and honoured to be the first and only unsigned band to be selected, and are the only Irish act at the festival. More European dates and festivals are planned for the Summer months. In June the band release their new record 'Haunt Me When I'm Drowsy'. This seven track CD displays Halves' growing diversity of sound, from the crunching distortions of "May your enemies never find happiness" to the epic orchestral embrace of "In the Sorrow….In the Fire". The record (alongside a repress of the first ep) will be released across Europe and the UK with Irish and European dates scheduled throughout the Summer. "It's with great pleasure that I discover that Halves are actually bloody brilliant" Hot Press review of Eurosonic gig, Jan '08.  / "Responsible for one of the finest Irish releases this year...They are an example of the rise in quality of Irish electronica, unafraid to be intense, engaging and dark..Music that demands your attention" Sunday Tribune / "A gorgeous, tranquil wash of glazed ambience and dreamy guitar noise….. this performance possessed a cosmic beauty that few others can reach" Hot Press, HWCH review, October '07.  Tracks 1 darkenings, 2. may your enemies never find happiness, 3. amberscene, 4. the lamp dies....a sleeping circuit wakes, 5. medals, 6. in the sorrow, in the fire, 7. morning breaks the sleep recorder.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
