What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Silly Billy Brian feeling happy.

Mockingbird are Swedish. They like to pen a sweet acoustic lullaby they do. 'Pictures (too big to fit in a sight)' falls somewhere between Belle & Garfunkel or Simon & Sebastian with a jaunty foot tapping feel, fey lyrics about getting pissed on absinthe, skippy flute flourishes & possibly a cello somewhere. It's a most pleasant tune indeed and is on top mod label Blow Up who've obviously sold their parkas & Lambrettas & bought tweed suits & golf umbrellas now. Tsk, fashion, what a fickle beast indeed. Ltd 7" only....

What the label says:

A. Pictures (Too Big To Fit In A Sight) / B.    A Note In The Margin. / Mockingbird, Wish Me Luck – an 8-piece pop-orchestra from Ängelholm, Sweden – release their limited debut single Pictures (Too Big To Fit In A Sight) on Monday 2nd June, as a precursor to their debut album Days Come and Go, to be released on Monday 9th June. Whilst Pictures is taken from their forthcoming album, Side B A Note In The Margin will only be available on the single. Everything has been done without any help and in the true DIY indie spirit - drums were recorded in their rehearsal room and almost everything else in their parents’ apartment. Despite their admittance that “nobody really knew which buttons to push”, by the time Blow Up Records made contact in early Summer 2007, they had quite a collection of songs – both beautiful and unforgettable. They decided to put these together, along with some new tracks, to form their debut album Days Come And Go.  When the recording was complete in Autumn 2007, songwriters Daniel and Niklas flew to London for additional production and mixing at The Premises in Hackney with Nick Terry (Klaxons, SMD). "God only knows why, but the Swedes are super proficient at doing pop music. Grand songs, delivered well. Belle and Sebastian and Neutral Milk Hotel in bed with Agnetha Fältskog?."  STOOL PIGEON / "Gorgeous indie pop. I could listen to this for months and not tire of it." SWEDESPLEASE.NET / "Short, sweet and perfectly formed. It sounds good, very good." NUDE

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
