Liquid Liquid: Slip In & Out Of Phenomenon (Domino) Sorry to bore all the heads reading this mindless bit off guff, but just to re-iterate: Liquid Liquid wrote Cavern and Optimo, one which formed the backbone (bassline) to a certain Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five record that was dead famous back when hip hop and rap was good and worth listening to. This is yet another collection of reissued odds and sods- the three ep's essentially with some other additions. For the those still in the dark this is a motley brew of stripped down percussive punk-funk, stylistically more along the lines of a looser, sunnier A Certain Ratio, or a Rip Rig & Panic with less free Jazz skronk. Our Brian reckons it's had the widescreen re-mastering FX. I like the fact that I can have a bout of nostalgia about the early New York Noise style dance fad, bliss out to the dubbed out horns, melodica , scratchy bass grooves. One of my albums of this week of releases. Out of print for a while now, discover who The Rapture modeled themselves on, what that DFA label's aesthetic is moulded around. This is an important historical document, if you like PIL, Pop Group then you be feeling this.

Domino Records are proud to release this comprehensive retrospective of seminal New York band Liquid Liquid. Orbiting around a core configuration of drums, bass, marimba and percussion, Sal Principato’s voice incanted and chanted. As well as an intensity to the grooves that is very much of its time – you can hear the group reaching for every note and beat – Liquid Liquid were locked together by a sticky looseness that is as head-noddingly infectious now as it must have been desirously strange at the time.
The classic EP’s are included here amongst 4 long lost studio recordings and 8 live tracks.
Today Liquid Liquid’s legacy is everywhere. The UK’s hippest club, Glasgow’s Optimo is named after a track on this CD, a piece of music any DJ would kill to get their hands on as its skitters and twitches its way across the dancefloor. Fellow NYC residents DFA resurrected the uptight downtown funk of Liquid Liquid and contemporaries ESG in their early productions and edits, whilst today’s vogue for live instruments in ‘balearock’ italo and electro club tracks means Liquid Liquid’s way of doing things has come full circle.
The release of the retrospective seems perfectly timed with the renaissance of the African beats inspired music and their new breed of bands such as Vampire Weekend, Dirty Projectors, White Rabbits etc and the renewed interest in what Liquid Liquid were doing so well.
Sal and Dennis will be in the UK to DJ around release date. Richard McGuire is designing 3 tee shirts for the very popular and respected brand Stussy, which will be sold worldwide and will bring more attention onto the band for release.
