William D Drake is the chapster from Cardiacs, a band who put the baroque into rock apparently. His 4 track 7" is called 'Earthly Shrine' and should appeal to the kinda folks who like avant prog radio pop with a widescreen classical twist. You can tell the guy is one mean talent, his songs have lots of slightly pompous but colourful flourishes, all executed with the kind of prodigious glee you expect from a man who's probably a complete godhead to many underground rock fans. Put next to the kind of embarrassing fraud that is The Duke Special, this wipes the floor with much of the contemporary "scene". It's a seamless blend of giddy classic pop heights & stately neo classical touches that sounds quite breathtaking in it's scope. A real surprise!Be the first to review this record.
