What we say

Rating: angry This record left our BRIAN D feeling angry.

Effi Briest come recommended for fans of early Banshees, The Slits and the gothic, tribal femme fatale end of the new new wave sphere. To be totally frank, this multiple member unit from Brooklyn smell a little fishy, The bass reminds me of The Mission circa '88 (remember 'Severina' ??), the drums from Running up that Hill by La Bush, the whole thing is probably like a Skeletal Family B-side. Total UK goth circa '82. Buy some Southern Death Cult from yr local cobweb emporium instead, or if yr a contemporary kid, give yr money to the Violets on Angular instead (they need your money more). This is a typical case of the Yanks selling us our own music back again. I'm very cynical on this as it's plainly not half as fresh & vital as Loog records would have you believe. I come from West Yorkshire, spiritual home of all things goth. Bela Lugosi's shadow permeates every dusty nook & grimy cranny of these dark, foreboding streets & I wouldn't give a used Ghost Dance tour poster for this single. Beware the hype....... 'Long Shadow' is a very ltd 7"

What the label says:

Limited 7" from EFFI BRIEST… EFFI BREIST are seven enchanting, stylish and talented ladies that reside mostly in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They mix African, psych, krautrock, and goth into something completely new and their own. There have been comparisons to early Siousxie, but it's primitive animism is as evocative of late period Slits. With its dubby drum & bass, skinny reggae guitar, backwards acoustic counterpoint, accordion, syncopating percussion, chanting vocals, their next single seems a fair indication of where the band is headed.
For fans of: Can, Kate Bush, Slits, early Siouxsie And The Banshees… Recently toured with Sunburned Hand Of The Man, The Kills, Boris, Fiery Furnaces, Devendra Banhart… Press support expected from NME, PLAN B, UNCUT…. Tracklist: A. Long Shadow  B. Pheonix

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
