What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

The Laurel Collective have a 7" out on Double Six Records (a division of the Domino empire) and what interests me is the B side is called The Krypton Factor. When someone was dead brainy in school we called 'em Tefal or said they were well Krypton Factor. Did anyone else do that? The single has finished already and I couldn't tell you one thing about it which doesn't bode enormously well. Hey at least they're trying... more than I am right now. 'Vuitton Blues' is 7" only.

What the label says:

A psyched-out pop epic with a chorus you'll be singing in the shower for months to come.

Laurel Collective are a genre trashing six-piece led by the twin attack and contrasting vocals of front men Martin Sakutu and Bob Tollast.

Imagine the motley crew spirit of such misfit gangs as The Specials and Dexys mixed with the rhythmical assault and groove of Sly Family Stone, and blended with the psychedelic pop sensibilities of Super Furry Animals and you’d be halfway there.
Debut single ‘Vuitton Blues’ is a psyched-pop epic with a chorus of gargantuan proportions. It has the oddball charm to match its epic ambitions that over the course of four minutes taps into the euphoric spirit of Brian Wilson’s “Teenage Symphonies to God".   Already securing widespread support especially from XFM, the band already have a huge cult following, selling out Hoxton Bar and Grill before even getting signed.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
