What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus feeling happy.

Tickley Feather: S/T (Paw Tracks) On the Animal Collective related label is this twenty track collection of naievty and lo-fi whimsy. All recorded on four track and collected from the past four years experimentation, Tickley Feather is lone female; Annie Sachs known for touring as support to Animal Collective with whom she shares a love of lo-budget instrumentation, heavily treated vocals and FX, but most of all the simple charms of a simply song sung with originality and personality. The keyboards plink and plonk, the drum machines clatter and spurt whilst the vocals come swathed in reverbed mesh of cavernous depth. This CD is beyond twee, the tracks are so short if you blink you'd miss them. What's so endearingley appealling is the honesty and sheer guile of the approach taken. Stripped of vocals this would even make a very good lo-fi electronica opus. There's no comparing, fortunately. Like playing at the local Rec just before Mum calls you in for bed...aaw mum!

What the label says:

TICKLEY FEATHER, the self-titled debut by Philadelphia’s Annie Sachs, is a collection of Late Night path-finding sounds, gingerly home recorded using budget electronics.
Selected from the past four years, these songs are washed in effects and demonstrate a barbaric yet meticulous instrumentation, along with a paradoxically, otherworldly and natural vocal style. The resulting sounds tell a secret
that feels serendipitous.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
