What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Kranky records is usually a pretty strong label. Over the years they've released some very special albums. I saw Stars of The Lid the other night and they blew me away. Bless 'em. Cloudland Canyon are a different proposition for the label. They make more of a krautrock racket you see and the opener 'Krautwerk' is just like Amon Duul. It's all very psychedelic and cosmic. It ranges from the more rocky end of things to some psyched up droney pop gear. I think this is about the 3rd or 4th time I've heard this now and it's starting to push my buttons. It's very 'songy' as well... I was expecting long drawn out mad jams of huge epic Kraut proportion but it's surprisingly poppy (well it's not like Girls Aloud but it's poppy for this sort of thing). OK I like it already. 'Lie In Light' is released on LP and CD.

What the label says:

‘Lie In Light’ is a work of extraordinary, hypnotic intensity and brain-melting beauty.
It appears there is a second "kosmische musik" period in full bloom around the world at the moment, not so much "kosmische" as in "krautrock" but instead "cosmic".
You can play pick the influences if you like, but you can do that with any group. Cloudland certainly owe a debt to the German underground of the 70’s, but they have also added flourishes of baroque pop and even a tinge
of the 80’s New Zealand scene into their sound.
From the lock down groove of the opening track "Krautwerk", to the dense buzz of "White Woman", through the
pastoral psych of "Heme" and on to the gentle wash of the closer "Mothlight", Cloudland Canyon have created an
eclectic and rewarding listen.
This new album follows the Silver Tongued Sisyphus EP on Kranky, and their Exterminating Angel collaboration with Lichens on the Holy Mountain label.

Tracklisting: 01. Krautwerk 02. White Woman 03. You & I 04. Scheiße Schatzi, Auf Wiedersehen 05. Heme 06. Lie In Light 07. Mothlight Part 1

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
