What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Mingus feeling unmoved.

The Wave Pictures: Strange Fruit For David (Moshi Moshi) The 'she said' style lyric that's emblazoned on the back of the sleeve is worth a read before you actually listen to the song itself. The instrumentation is very much in the neo-folk style of the likes of Johnny Flynn. acoustic guitar, bass, drums and handclaps. It's the cringe worthy lyrics that let it down rather than the competent simple, music. Why oh why do some (male) singers feel as though they have to portray themselves as some sort of arty bohemian craftsmen, when they can't write a decent lyric. Nice tune though.

What the label says:

Overview: Literate and timeless, irreverent and true, The Wave pictures produce classic pop in the stripped down rock’n’roll tradition. “sStrange Fruit for David” is the new single on Moshi Moshi

Last single Love You Like A Madman garnered play at Radio 1, XFM, 6Music and Jonathan Ross at Radio 2, and secured the band sessions with Huw Stephens and John Kennedy.  A month long residency at Camden’s Enterprise has been rammed to the rafters, and next up on the schedule is a show with friend and collaborator Darren Hayman and two appearances at this year’s Red Stripe Camden Crawl.
Debut album INSTANT COFFEE BABY is released on Moshi Moshi on May 5th.  Recorded in the basement studio of The Duke Of Uke music shop on Hanbury Road, East London, it comes comprised largely of live takes; with overdubs reserved for the odd backing vocal, violin, brass or guest appearance.  Here is the simple spacious recording of early blues and country records and the essential Garage band ‘roots pop’ of the Crickets.  Allowing their twisted love songs to evoke the grubby romance within the very fabric of English life, basking in the invigorating quality of youth that is purely The Wave Pictures.
Strange Fruit For David is available on 7” - b/w a new song Puncture My Pride (LIMITED TO 600 COPIES) – and download.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'I wonder if it's worth getting a skip?'
