What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Sonic Cathedral have decided to excite matters further with the latest installment in their shoegaze/dream pop series & nobly ignoring the M83 remix of a probably perfectly fine Maps tune, I check the flip to see how much better the Frenchman has been served by the Englo-meister. I prefer it on 33 because it shows how beautiful old synths can sound, proper haunting. It's a euphoric, cerebral pop orchestra is this, the song MUCH stronger than the Maps effort, but it's far too fast. Pitch it down ferchrissakes. Limited 7" on Sonic Cathedral

What the label says:

A MAPS – TO THE SKY (M83 MIX)
AA M83 – WE OWN THE SKY (MAPS MIX)

The eighth single on Sonic Cathedral Recordings (SCR008) is something very special indeed. A split
seven-inch featuring two of our favourite bands – MAPS and M83 – remixing each others’ work.
The A-side needs no introduction. ‘TO THE SKY’ was one of the many highlights of Maps’ Mercury-nominated debut album ‘We Can Create’, but M83’s ANTHONY GONZALEZ reworks it as a mournful slice of melancholia with several different segments, reminiscent of Spiritualized’s classic ‘Feel So Sad’, before funereal drums crash in towards the end and the whole thing concludes with a gloriously uplifting coda.
A fitting finale for the first phase of Maps’ career, as they are now hard at work recording their second album, which will be released by Mute later this year.
The AA-side, ‘WE OWN THE SKY’, is taken from French electrogazers M83’s eagerly-awaited fifth album, ‘Saturdays=Youth’, which is released by Mute on April 14. Maps’ JAMES CHAPMAN has turned the original track, which was co-produced by Sigur Rós man Ken Thomas and Berlin-based dance boffin Ewan Pearson, into a wonky slice of electronica that builds into something that is at once beautiful and disconcerting, not unlike My Bloody Valentine gone disco. It’s the perfect taster for the new album.
The single is released as a limited-edition seven-inch on Monday, April 7. It will be available online from
WWW.SONICCATHEDRAL.CO.UK as well as selected indie stores around the country. To support the release, James Chapman DJs at Sonic Cathedral at The Social, London W1 on Wednesday, April 30, alongside Ulrich Schnauss and live sets from Airiel and Autumn Chorus.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
