The Shortwave Set
No Social

This record left our Mingus Who? feeling happy.
The Shortwave Set: No Social (Wall Of Sound) Sixties spy movie theme intro leading to further explorations of sixties styles: female vocal choruses, hammond organ twirls- or is it a theremin?, bursts of noise and a retro sounding beat. The lyrics feature the classic line that 'a dog dressed in clothes is still a dog'. Production is by that man Dangermouse who gets about these days don't you think? A good pop single that's crying out for radio play. Somehow I just can't imagine filing Wall Of Sound in my collection, it's those big beat days I'm afraid. On 7" and 10" which includes two mixes by Glasgows truly ace Optimo crew.

What their label says...
‘No Social’ is the perfect preview to the forthcoming follow up album ‘Replica Sun Machine’, the psychedelic pop adventure of the year, where acid-bright sunshine casts eerie shadows and illuminates uncomfortable truths and ‘No Social’ pulls all these elements together beautifully.
At the invitation of production maestro Danger Mouse (a huge fan of the band’s debut album ‘The Debt Collection’) The Shortwave Set, label-less and virtually penniless, maxed out their credit cards for a trip to Los Angeles last June, where they wasted no time in availing themselves of the string arranging talents of Van Dyke Parks (legendary Beach Boys collaborator – ‘Smile’, ‘Heroes and Villains’ etc) and the distinctive soundscapes and atmospherics of The Velvet Underground’s John Cale. The resulting album ‘Replica Sun Machine’, is an impossible-to-get-out-off-your-head trip, like a European Flaming Lips inspired by the baroque pop of the Left Banke, the cinematic scope of Serge Gainsbourg and the discomforting drama of Nico's solo albums.
Released across four formats, the B-sides to ‘No Social’ feature ‘White Lie’ an equally endearing psychedelic pop masterpiece. The package is rounded off perfectly with a suitably leftfield mix by Glasgow’s finest Optimo and an instrumental version on the 10” and download.
