What the label says:
The legendary Thalia Zedek (Come, Live Skull, Uzi) returns with a brand new album for Thrill Jockey. Thalia Zedek has been a force on the independent musical landscape for over 20 years, dating back to her days in Live Skull and Uzi. Along with Chris Brokaw, she fronted the band Come who released four records on Matador. This is Thalia's second album for Thrill Jockey; a follow-up to 2004's Trust Not Those in Whom Without Some Touch of Madness’, and the first to feature her new full band. Throughout her career Thaila's voice has been a singular calling card. Her songwriting has great depth and a pervading melancholic tone. Much like the work of Nick Cave, Thalia's vocals and song arrangements have a pervasive bittersweet tone. She has chosen unusual instrumentation such as viola to compliment her guitar work and like a great full bodied burgundy, her songs are rich in texture and reveal with each listen their delicately crafted layers. Her 2004 debut album for Thrill Jockey, ‘Trust Not Those in Whom Without Some Touch of Madness’ garnered great critical acclaim and Thalia’s 2004 Australian show was named in The Wire magazine’s Top 100 greatest shows ever. Having worked with her close friends and musicians Daniel Coughlin (drums) and David Michael Curry (viola) for many years Thalia felt a desire to expand her sound beyond that of a trio. The band began by asking Winston Braman (Sheperdess) to play bass with them on a series of East Coast shows with Dinosaur Jr. It worked out so well and had been such a long time since Thalia had a bass player in her arrangements that the addition of Mel Lederman (Victory at Sea) on piano made complete sense. Mel had already played on many of Thalia's records but had never toured with them. Thus was born the new five piece Thalia Zedek Band, introducing to us a much fuller sound and giving us ‘Liars and Prayers’ the masterwork of her thus far impressive career. Thalia's voice and songs have never been stronger and the full band allows her to combine the delicacy of the arrangement of her trio with the force that was her band Come. The very moving ‘Body Memory’ is a poignant example of this perfect synthesis. “Nothing draws as much blood as the work of this songwriter, one of the most painfully honest and brilliant anywhere” - Time Out New York. “One of the strongest vocalists and most pronounced creative presences in music" – HARP.
