What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brett feeling happy.

The pretty boys and girls of Ladytron make a welcome return on a new label (Nettwork) who hopefully won't totally balls up the launch the way Island managed with Witching Hour. It's much more in the vein of that album's 'My Bloody Valentine meets New Order' style than their older stuff which will probably be a disappointment to some but I'm quite happy with that, as much as I do love '604'. Their trademark lyrics of the everyday come together with more overtly rocky themes of escapist and mystery, the two standout tracks for me (other than 'Ghosts', the first single) are probably 'Runaway' and 'Season of Illusions' which are good examples. It's got quite an interesting feel to it, almost like a series of mid-paced second or third singles but it does still come together rather nicely. The boys even get in on the vocal act on the final track which is quite disorientating, sounding like Martin Fry or something, maybe a name change to Ladyboytron is imminent.. With Alan Partridge to guest as their Bez, swaying seductively in his vulcanised rubber pants. The 'ooh ooh' right at the end reminds me of a chant these scary ice people did on that Ewoks cartoon in the 80s which is quite fitting really given their image (ice maidens, not furry dwarves). I've always found Ladytron albums to sound great from the first listen then carry on growing on me so this is as good a first impression as I could've hoped for really. Plus it passes the classic acid test for their stuff, it sounds bloody great when you're cruising along the motorway late at night.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
