What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Pocketbooks have a self released CD out called Waking Up. The self titled track has this nice tinkly piano refrain running through it which is nothing short of lovely. The whole EP is just some proper honest to goodness sounding indie pop..... nothing pretentious, not a whiff of money here. Just a bunch of folks making music for music's sake. I could of course be terribly wrong but that's what I get and that has to be commended. Some of it sounds a bit like demo's and there's some massive nods towards Belle & Sebastian on the odd track. Brian even parped up the Beautiful South. There you go.... CD only...

What the label says:

The EP is a sparkling blend of boy/girl harmonies, spiraling guitars and delicate piano lines. It contains four inventive and uplifting songs, taking life’s daily dilemmas, tousling their hair and whisking them away to the dancefloor.

Pocketbooks are a pop group from London – one moment creating heartstopping melodies and harmonies, and the next casting a spell of delicacy and intimacy. There’s a sprinkling of dazzling 60s soul alongside the stylish charm of Camera Obscura, Saint Etienne, Belle and Sebastian and The Pipettes.

The band formed in 2006, having met on the dancefloors of London’s indiepop and northern soul clubs. Even before we’d played a gig, we appeared on the acclaimed compilation, The Kids At The Club (How Does It Feel To Be Loved?), alongside established names including Voxtrot, I'm From Barcelona and Lucky Soul.

In 2007, we headlined the first ever Indietracks festival on a steam railway in the Derbyshire countryside. We’ve also played shows across the country – from London to Sheffield and Brighton to Leeds – alongside bands including Fanfarlo, The School, Monica Queen, Butcher Boy and Saturday Looks Good To Me.

We released our debut 7” single ‘Cross The Line’ on the Atomic Beat Records label in May 2007, and appeared on a Smalltown America compilation in November, following in the footsteps of The Go! Team and Blood Red Shoes.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
