What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

The good lord Mark Kozelek has a new album out as Sun Kil Moon on Caldo Verde. The initial copies of April come with a bonus 4 track CD which feature 4 alternate versions of tracks from the album. As ever Mr Kozelek's voice is on top form.... whatever you think about this guy you can't deny he's got a great voice. Really melty sounding. As ever it's gentle paced (slightly rocky at times) Americana which will soothe your battered mind. It's hard tog et a proper handle on this in the time that I have to write about it but on first hearing I reckon if you were a fan of Tiny Cities you'd like this.

What the label says:

"From 10-minute, three-guitar jams to heartbreaking acoustic ballads, April shines with the most evocative music of Kozelek's career." Jonathan Cohen, Billboard

"Mark Kozelek returns with an album of rare warmth and immediacy, where intensely personal lyrics hang on hazily magnificent melodies." Aidin Vaziri, San Francisco Chronicle

April, the new album from Sun Kil Moon, is Mark Kozelek's first original record since the acclaimed 2003 Sun Kil Moon debut Ghosts Of The Great Highway. 11 songs at almost 74 minutes, April is a collection of songs recorded between March and August 2007 in San Francisco (Hyde Street Studios) and Seattle (Well Recording). In the spirit of Sun Kil Moon's Ghosts and Tiny Cities, Mark was joined by the same players as before, including drummer Anthony Koutsos (Red House Painters), bassist Geoff Stanfield (Black Lab), violist Michi Aceret, and percussionist David Revelli. April also finds Mark in the company of guest vocalists Bonnie Prince Billy, Ben Gibbard, and Eric Pollard (Retribution Gospel Choir). Mark will play select solo dates coinciding with the release, and will tour with Sun Kil Moon later in the year.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
