Interesting cheap comp on Crossword Records Compilation Volume 2. 23 tracks by electronic dudes, experimental folksters, contemporary poets & neo-hip hop artists gathered from round the country on this cool Oxford/Brighton imprint. Flicking through the vast selection on here I'd say this was worth a fiver of anyone's money. It all sounds nice & fresh, melodic & intelligent. Time constraints & sanity prevail here so click on one of the blue links here to see the press release. The track 'A Letter to British Aerospace' is one of many standouts, hypnotic lightning fingered guitar loops, sweeping melancholy strings & found sound follow a smart piece of poetry. You know the score with comps. No-one's gonna put a shit track on a sampler are they? So this is a perfect way to access some of the cream of Britain's eclectic underground. Heartily recommended.Crossword Records is a young label based in Brighton and Oxford. It was a formed as an outlet for music that otherwise may not have been heard but should be. After releasing the labels first compilation last year, interest from other like minded artists from around the world grew and led to the need for a second compilation.
Crossword Records Volume.2, due for release on the 24th March, is a combination of experimental Hip-Hop, Spokenword poetry, glitch electronica and guitar based experimental pop, with all of these influences smoothly linking the tracks despite differing emphasis, from bringing together poets of note such as ‘J.D Rhodes’ and ‘Keston Sutherland’, to the chopped Hip-Hop based beats of ‘Penfold’.
The compilation has contributions from 23 artists based around the U.K, America, and Europe.
One of many notable contributions is that of Plosives (a.k.a Andrew Mears of Oxford based band ‘Youthmovies’) who is also set to release his first solo album ‘Pump the Midscene’ on Crossword records later this year. Members of Jonquil (BirdriB, Poems While Drowning, eleven/twenty-two) also contribute.
