What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Here's a quirky album by DOF called 'Red Pine Pasture'. His last album (Sun, Strength & Shield) was one of the finest examples of folktronica (I fucking hate that word but it does the job sometimes) that has graced my fat ears. On this new album you get a bunch of brand new tracks and a bunch of remixes. The new track see a change in direction as there's vocals on board and it sounds just like a cross between Caribou and Cornelius. The sound is very full with about a million things going on at any given moment yet it's very cohesive and uncluttered on the brain. Bizarre for anything that full sounding to be reasonably easy on the ear. Obviously a talented dude and the remixes aren't too bad either (Low In The Sky, Set In sand etc) but it's the Crillix remix which rocks my world.... funky and fucked sounding glitch pop with a melodic chorus of sorts which is astonishingly good. I've sworn too much in this review which means people at school won't be able to buy this CD. Worra twat.

What the label says:

Red Pine Pasture is a new album from DoF, the electronic alter-ego of Pittsburgh PA native Brian
Hulick who has quietly been making one of the most pure examples of folktronica in existence. It
features an ep's worth of new material and a handfull of remixes from the ABR extended family,
serving as an appetizer for DoF's next full length sometime in 08.
DoF first came to the attention of discerning file sharers with his inclusion on the early Soulseek
compilations, and became a definite artist to watch with his debut If more then 20 people laugh it
wasn't funny on UK label Highpoint Lowlife. His next two physical release's (the classic EP Mine is May
and the frighteningly good full-length Sun Strength and Shield) were both released by Abandon
Building and enjoyed condsiderable success, receiving many nice reviews.
Dof has contributed to numerous compilations and net labels, highlights including the album "A
Year In Waiting" for Drift Records, and tracks on Assemblage Sessions Volumes 1 and 2 from ABR, the
Peppermill's Karaoke Hymnal project and most recently a remix on the Au Revoire Simone remix
bonus cd.
On Red Pine Pasture Brian turns his back on 7+ years of mostly instrumentals, with vocals on all but
one of his contributions to the album. His soft and sweet singing voice harmonizes wonderfully with
the instrumentation creating a downright joyful feeling that's sure to make even the most jaded
hipster smile.
The remixes feel more naturally integrated than on a typical rehash album. The contributers (Low
In The Sky, Crillix, Jason Corder, Phylum Sinter and Set In Sand) are all big fans of DoF's work and have
all contributed to ABR in the past, with plans for future releases as well. Red Pine Pasture will appeal to
the instrumental electronica heads that make up DoF's fan base, while reaching out to new listeners
who desire vocals to hold their hands. peace.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
