What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our BRIAN D feeling ecstatic.

Oh. I asked if I could review Black Kids and now here we are. It's radio indie pop but done very, very well. Swirling euphoric keyboard, baggy drums, air punching vocals, Go! Team cheerleader backing vox, classic ad-libs like mid 80s Cure, this is an absolutely great song. It makes me think a little bit of late period James crossed with New Radicals. I can see why there's a buzz about these as 'I'm not gonna teach your boyfriend how to dance with you' is an iresistable slice of youthful Springtime joy that is guaranteed to put a grin on anyones face, and get this. i think it's got staying power. Limited 12" on white vinyl, 7" on pink (THIS FORMAT MAY HAVE SOLD OUT BY THE WEEKEND) & CDs

What the label says:

Black Kids have been caught in a whirlwind of exciting, encouraging and
head-fuzzing media attention in recent months and whilst many can start the
hype machine turning; very few have the songs, the style, the humour and the
unashamed pop sensibilites of this bunch.

The Black Kids hail from Jacksonville, Florida and comprise of brother /
sister Reggie and Ali Youngblood who sing and play guitar and keys
respectively, Dawn Watley also on keys and vocals and the driving rhythm
section of Owen Holmes on bass and Kevin Snow on drums.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
