What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Chris Abrahams/ Mike Cooper collaboration CD called 'Oceanic Feeling'- Like'. This album is one of the more experimental titles in this week. The music is largely constructed by piano and guitar and after listening to it twice I can say I quite enjoyed it. The guitar is put to some use on this record as it's barely recognisable as a guitar most of the time. In fact you probably wouldn't know it was a guitar unless someone pointed it out to you... like I just did. It's quite film score ish and to me it sounds like the soundtrack to a disturbing art house film. The plot would consist of lots of people with mental health problems, some disturbing murder action, some warm gentle sentimental moments punctuated by people with golden painted faces generally causing havoc. Lots of avant tinkles and other worldly guitar pickings make this a good choice for you chins out there. Hollywood here I come.

What the label says:

"The sea pronounces something, over and over, in a hoarse whisper; I cannot quite make it out." Annie Dillard

It’s this musical whisper that is amplified on Oceanic Feeling-Like, as Italian based musician Mike Cooper and Australia’s Chris Abrahams unite for the first time to create what could be described as a picturesque horizon of melodic ocean swell.

Stretching out wide, Oceanic Feeling-Like is generously coloured by Cooper’s unique approaches to the guitar and Abrahams' distinctive piano motions. Both bring a wealth of technique and improvised flare, creating a series of island-like compositions that eventually form an unusually divergent sound archipelago.

Recorded in Sydney at Abrahams’ home studio, each of the pieces explores a unique sound space – that’s both reflective and reflexive.

Truly a release that ebbs and flows in the best way imaginable. An ocean of sound awaits - sometimes calm and flowing, occasionally chopping and unexpected, but always experiential.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'if you can’t be the song, let the song be.'
