What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Phil feeling unmoved.

I was quite excited about the Breeders album 'Mountain Battles' but after 11 tracks I can safely say there's nothing there which has immediately caught my attention. The opener sounds a bit like Janes Addiction which gets me off on the wrong foot. Not that I mind them but it's not what I want from a Breeders record. It's a thoroughly underwhelming experience. Maybe it will grow? I don't know? It's hard to get a proper judge on a record in one sitting. Often they need to be digested over a period of weeks. It all sounds very Breeders (it couldn't really be anyone else) but it sounds like somethings missing.... I don't know what that is though. I still reckon Pod is one of the best albums ever though. This is rather a disappointment though as Title TK was I shouldn't be surprised.

What the label says:

This Spring sees the release of the first Breeders album since 2002's ‘Title TK’.
By turns goofy, groovy, melancholy, strung-out, catchy, atmospheric and - at times - impossibly lovely, ‘Mountain Battles’ underlines that Kim Deal is a songwriter and a musician of rare intuition.  Her songs move from offhand charm to emotional truth with casual grace, balancing scuffed-up noise against fraught silence; timeless structures against strange new shapes. And throughout, of course, there's Kim's unique voice – languid, urgent, bruised and beautiful.  In short, ‘Mountain Battles’ captures all the bittersweet electricity of classic Breeders records like ‘Pod’ and ‘Last Splash’, and still manages to break new ground.
‘Mountain Battles’ was recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Erika Larson at Stagg Street, Manny Nieto at Manny's Studio, at Refraze in Dayton and by Ben Mumphrey in the Basement.   The band were Kelley Deal, Kim Deal and ‘Title TK’ veterans Jose Medeles and Mando Lopez.
At the beginning of April 2008, The Breeders return to the UK for their first dates since the summer of 2002.
Available as limited edition deluxe digipack CD, vinyl LP and standard jewelcase CD.
