What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

The Long Blondes release their second album 'Couples' thru' Rough Trade and it's a right old new wave party banger. Apparently the singer is a model. She needs to sort out her eye make up on the front of this week's Artrocker I reckon. It looks like an alien has been doing something rude to her....ahem. The thing I never noticed about the single' Century' was its brief similarity to 'Echo Beach', a well loved indie disco hit. Well, I loved it. It begins with said single, continuing in a strutting pop vein with the Chic-esque disco stepper 'Guilt', full of classic hooks & unmistakably the work of this Sheffield quintet. 'The Couples' is more old school 'Blondes, foot tapping indie pop. Then it goes new wave disco for 'I Liked the Boys'. There's even shades of lo-fi glam/goth stomp on here, a right melting pot of styles with some really familiar touches, then you realize they're all lifted from those legendary 80's hits you'd almost forgotten about, then shoehorned into an album that almost manages to reference Siouxsie & the Banshees in the same breath as Giorgio Moroder! Timeless Northern pop that refuses to stick to the indie guitar template but also manages to avoid the disposable pitfalls that dog popular music. Just a well rounded album that grows with each listen. That lady has the sultriest voice in Yorkshire too. Grrrrr!

What the label says:

April 7th sees the release of “Couples” the much anticipated second platter by The Long Blondes. Full of futuristic yet retrospective genius, the 10 tracks bounce you from one end of the indie disco to the other with absolutely no regard for conforming to any stereotypes. Tub thumping modernist indie disco at its absolute finest, their first record was a belter and “Couples” has beaten it hands down moving The Long Blondes on a north country mile.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.

'tried and tested and consequently failed...'
