What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Finally from moi is a CD on Bella Union from Our Broken Garden. 'Lost sailor' is the work of singer songwriter lady Anna Broendsted. A 6 track EP of voice piano, strings and gentle drums The mood is somber sometimes a little dark and very personal sounding. This isn't really my bag but its good quality honest music. All very serious sounding and all. I'd much rather listen to this than Adele and Duffy shrieking everywhere like tortured pigeons.... I want my dinner.

What the label says:

In the summer of 2006 Anna Broendsted found a hidden paradise amongst the hills, forests, and lakes. There with her friends she moved into an old abandoned village school, and it was here that she began to write the songs for Our Broken Garden’s first EP. In the songs Anna compiled pictures of the often dark, irrational, and subconscious side of human nature. She was constantly battling with the age old problem of sinking or swimming– whether she could find her footing and make it ashore, or suffer the despair of drowning. Melancholy and darkness stood in strong contrast to her constant hope. Hope that would give her the space to breathe, and a deep felt sensation of happiness.

After six months of recording the album was complete. Anna was offered a boat trip across the Atlantic with two unknown sailors. Without knowing what it would be like to be in the open sea on a 31ft sailboat, she readily agreed. At the same time as the boat set sail from Cape Town (South Africa), Ian Caple started mixing the music. Not till then did Anna realise that her subconscious had played a trick on her. The lyrics she had written a year ago were immersed in powerful water symbols – and now she had thrown herself out to the open sea to travel 7000 kilometres.

When the boat arrives in Rio de Janeiro two months later the EP had been mixed and is complete. Anna then created a Myspace profile and contacted the record label Bella Union as a first friend-request - the same record company who later were to offer Our Broken Garden a record deal.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
