What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

Now a lovingly packaged 7" by Little Lost David in a black paper outsize mailer, all wax sealed & bound in string. All i can go by is an MP3 on the computer. It's a slightly celtic flavoured, impassioned thang with some gorgeous female backing over a yearning rootsy male voal. It's quite commercial but beautifully recorded & rather touching. Another track is more traditional foot stomping folk rock, very rousing & full sounding. Not hugely my bag but i could imagine him slaying the more trad inflected stages at Glasto or Fleidh etc. I dunno quite who amongst you indie noise electronik addicts this may appeal to other than fans of quality celtic singer songwriter gear (maybe one for the missus?) . Packaging is a treat mind & it's very limited. Check http://www.myspace.com/littlelostdavid for further sounclips & info. Some of you may just dig his stuff as it's rather hearty!

What the label says:

Little Lost David is a rare breed. Teamed with Alan Smyth (Artic Monkeys, Pulp, Reverend and The Makers), the 26 year-old singer/songwriter – AKA David Roch - is a pure, powerful musician who ‘s nailed the tone of modern life with his serrated songs of love and loss. An unknown quantity at this point, having mainly performed self-financed gigs throughout his hometown of Sheffield, he begins 2008 with a London residency at Barbican’s Slaughtered Lamb from February.

Influenced by a range of artists from Tom McRae to Ella Fitzgerald and even William Blake, Little Lost David is the sum total of his inspirations - and something more. Something new. Raw, emotionally strong, tight and expressive, his music is neither bound by restriction nor the notional idea of being cool. Dark, organic and personal, yet also beautiful, it’s a law unto itself.

From the first listen it’s clear - his songs are both autobiographical and achingly honest. Instantly engaging and delicately folk-tinged, their piercing sound offers a stark, soulful authenticity, rarely heard today. While it comfortably fits into the new school of British storytelling, it isn’t ashamed to show emotion, redemption or the salt in his wounds.

Now, news of his voice - and its beauty - is rapidly spreading by word of mouth. Whether it’s the pounding heart of ‘Hour of Need’, the crescendo-stomp of ‘Dew’, or the acapella beauty in
‘Devil Don’t Mind’, he’s armed with an arsenal of sonic gems. Each a personal insight into his emotional landscape, they’re carried off with enough skill to make them universal experiences for us all.

“My path into the industry began with a local band,” he says. “When that ended, I fell out of love with music for a good 6 months, before eventually picking up a guitar and writing again…purely for salvation against my demons.”

“The people in my life inspire me most of all - those that bring me joy and also to my knees. We can't have the happiness of yesterday without the pain of today. That's the deal.”

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
