What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Also most taken with this Nico Teen demo CD 'Two Trick Ponny' on AK Duck. It's a demo from last year full of dreamy, minimal DIY electro tinged pop from the mind of a talented lass indeed. I love the way the songs are unmastered, the wistful yet playful nature of these gentle tunes. There's spots that will appeal to fans of Stereolab & Broadcast but it's much more rudimentary & charming than a simple comparison to established artists could muster. One track is just her voice, pure & unadultered, over a brooding old organ line. Other spots on this 7 tracker remind me of Luscious Jackson in the sassy vocals, but stretched loosely over some dinky musical sketches, very lo-fi & proud. Every hook & chord change does something marvelous in it's simplicity and leaves you begging for a little more. Good stuff from this eclectic Israeli imprint!

What the label says:

"Two Trick Pony demo" is Nico Teen's second release (her debut EP Workshop released in 2006).
This roughly edited, not mastered EP contains 7 songs and puts emphasis on highly catchy tunes and strong vocals and vocal harmonies, using various home recording methods and toy synthesizers.
Most of the songs, as in her debut EP deal with inward journeys and enigmatic fantasies using simple melodies and rhythms. Nico Teen performes live and as a member of the electro pop outfit, K.G.Babes. The duo recently took part in "No No Logic Festival" in Barcelona. Nico Teen is also part of the improvising duo Cassexxe Vibrato.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

They even checked their logs to see if they could find a trace of it but nothing came out...
