Brainlove continue their crazy quest to twin some of the unlikeliest fringe indie artists in the world. And display them in full on caberet poses on the sleeve. Friends of the Bride give us some classic gentle indie pop, somewhere between Gene & Divine Comedy, all arch knowing, croonerish music hall tradition over some slice of foot tapping downtempo backing, lots of la la adlibs, melancholy twanging guitar & a very British sensibility. I think Marc Almond in his Gene Pitney rutting phase was attempting this kinda vibe. You get two tracks on their side, both spilling with tongue in cheek caberet spirit & dour English charm. Modernaire on the flip have dropped the 'S' in fear of being sued by some jazz legends (possibly) Their opening track makes me think of Suzanne Vega ad libbing over Mochipet at first then it goes all bendy home made disco pop referencing Tom Tom Club, Lily Allen & Betty Boo, just pure pop really, like a DIY Sugababes with lots of Korg electro glitches. It's irresistably catchy is 'Fait Vos Jeux'. 2nd track from 'em, 'Taste' is quite Goldfrapp-y in a fashion, A slight glam tinge to proceedings, over the lady's honeyed vocal that is quite honestly more impressive & soulful than all these Brit nominated muppets who think they're imbued with the spirit of Nina Simone. Bastards. Cool, unpretentious & very fine pop music from an interesting label indeed! The club will present 5 AA-side 7" singles featuring new songs by artists from the Brainlove label, delivered to your door every 8 weeks. The first single features songs by Napoleon IIIrd and Pagan Wanderer Lu; the second by Tim Ten Yen and Shimura Curves; the third Applicants and The Open Mouths; and the most recent, Bishi, Anat Ben-David, Planningtorock and Japanese Intelligence Mind Control. The final 7" is, instead of the one-minute 7" we had planned, Friends Of The Bride and Modernaire.
