Tracks - A: Golden Cage // B: Golden Cage (Fred Falke remix)
Having already garnered unabashed critical acclaim for debut album ‘Dreams’ March 31st welcomes The Whitest Boy Alive’s second release with the unleashing of pivotal album track ‘Golden Cage’. A dreamily ethereal song, Golden Cage combines the carefully controlled yet emotive tones of lead singer Erland Oye, over a toe tapping beat which leads the listener through a 3 minute wonderland of a track, and plays itself out like the soundtrack to a perfect winters day.
Having been recorded entirely live without any multi-tracking, Golden Cage further confirms the slinking, low strung groove that has come to typify the band and their sound. Couple this with a multi award winning video by outstanding artist and illustrator Geoff Mcfetridge- more commonly known for his work on director Sophia Coppola’s films- and you have yourself a beautiful lyrical and visual package who’s essence and beauty lies in the simplicity of it’s perfectly disguised complexities.
The quartet originally formed in 2003 as an electronic dance music project, a direct result of lead singer Erlend Oye hooking up with Marcin Oz- resident DJ at the city’s WMF club. The two set up studio with Erich Honecker in his secret hideout at Café Moskau and it was here they discovered and joined with two remaining members -Sebastian Maschat and Daniel Nentwig and so The Whitest Boy Alive was formed.
2008 saw the band perform on BBC2’s “The Culture Show” and play a widely praised live show at Camden’s Electric Ballroom selling out remarkably quickly, three months in advance of the show. A loud and delighted audience revelled in a set comprising of well-known album tracks along side a scattering of superb covers- including a genius interpretation of Robin S’s Show Me Love, much to the appreciation of the enraptured masses.
With such widespread support from both the music press and broadsheets, and a loyal, ever expanding fan base, The Whitest Boy Alive look set to join the ranks of this years most hotly tipped groups around. Their much anticipated 1500 capacity show at Koko on May 21st is already fast on it’s way to selling out.
