What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

Onto to the fantasticly monikered 4 or 5 Magicians on This Is Fake DIY Records. They quite possibly have the best band name I've heard in a while. Their 7" is called 'Change The Record' and in a word its great! I was quite surprised by this one. It's got the sort of chorus that 15 years ago would have got me wetting my pants in delight. It reminds me of a lot of the early to mid 90's noisy indie....There's bits of Cable, Ligament and Faith Healers in there. It doesn't really sound like any of them but the record really reminds me of those bands. It's a strong debut effort anyway. My head is mashed today....

What the label says:

"At last a believable British retort to the drawling rambles of Stephen Malkmus. Think Hefner's Darren Hayman fronting Guided By Voices. Ace." - Music Week
"The sort of lo-fi attack jam that Kurt Cobain would have creamed over" - Rocksound
"Recalls the brilliant early 90s" - The Fly
"A clattering pop-noise that weaves the singer along" - Steve Lamacq, Radio 1
"Really, really exciting" - Huw Stephens, Radio 1
"Lo-fi indie rock at its best" - Drowned In Sound
"Inherently fantastic" - Rock Feedback

4 Or 5 Magicians are a four (or five) piece from Brighton. They take most obvious influence from the likes of Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, Guided By Voices, Nirvana, The Pixies and Built To Spill, but could write a list as long as your arm of bands who have influenced them, and even then you'd have to have a pretty long arm, and a pretty small pen.

Upon recording their first demo in June 2006, Radio 1's Huw Stephens invited the band to record a session at Maida Vale studios. They then released their debut single through Alcopop!'s singles club, and now their second single 'Change The Record' / 'Ideal Man' will be released on a double A-side limited run of vinyl, and digital download, through This Is Fake DIY Records.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.

'why me, why me...'
