What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Mingus feeling unmoved.

Fleet Foxes: Sun Giant (Bella Union) The man at the helms immediate comparisons are My Morning Jacket, they do a take on the much recently updated take on the Alt Americana/folk slant. After much humming and aahing, the label have finally relented and decided to release this mini EP, due to a growing word-of-mouth following and hence pressure it finally gets an airing. Strains of gospel and the blue eyed soul of the Beach boys come to mind. It's the upfront, vocal led approach, chiming guitars and tribal, pounding drums together with a down at heel acoustic twirl that gives it a kind of 'Dad Rock' appeal. It's got, shall we say, a mature sound that would maybe appeal to fans of Harvest-era Neil Young. It's good in an almost middle of the road, again blue eyed soul, AM radio, road movie mode. Digipak CD only.

What the label says:

What is there to say? This is a band who look set to be the word-of-mouth success story of 2008… a band that will be the soundtrack to a thousand summers… and even more autumns… A band who have received 259,203 myspace plays in just a couple of months, and without having released a note of music… Ladies and Gentlemen I present to you Fleet Foxes…

Fleet Foxes are wonderful, in both senses of the word: they are breathtaking musically, but they also give the impression that they are filled with wonder about the world and successfully convey that sense of wonder to the listener. Drawing on a variety of influences - gospel, hymns, folk, motown, baroque pop - Fleet Foxes have fashioned the most uniquely beautiful sound you’ll hear this year.

Already on an extensive Tour of the US, the band have been asked to play an incredible list of showcases at SXSW including Sub Pop’s BBQ (who will be releasing the Album in the US) Pitchforks and NME’s (Details to follow.)

This is an incredible introduction to a band you will be hearing A LOT more about in the next few months…

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'Did you know a duck a hen and a sheep where the first ever passengers in a hot air baloon?'
