What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Mingus Rude feeling happy.

Essie Jain: 'We Made This Ourselves' (Leaf) A very mellow, melancholic, down tempo singer-songwriter offering from the new signing on the UK's Leaf label. Not exactly new, this collection was formerly released in America by the Ba Da Bing label. At times fragile and moving, the voice is clear and pure with a sparse backing of guitars and piano that add to the largely blue mood of this collection.Previously compared to Nick Drake, Low and Eliot Smith, these ten tracks lift themselves above the current dearth of female singer-songwriters through the sheer power of the atmospherics induced by the clear intonations and careful introduction of strings. If I had the time to listen to the lyrics I'd inform you of their content, that said, I can guarantee the mood is really sad sounding. One to live with. Recommended.

What the label says:

Twenty-nine-year-old British-born Essie Jain makes her recorded debut with the glacial delights of We Made This Ourselves, an album whose quiet, powerful minimalism is undeniable.
Born into a musical family, Essie grew up in London, where her childhood featured classical piano and cello instruction, as well as training in operatic singing. By the time she moved out of her teenage years, Essie had  suspended her musical education.
The new setting provided Jain with new experiences and musical environments. Meeting guitarist Patrick Glynn, her future musical foil, shone a light on the path forwards. The couple would perform low-key shows together around the NY folk circuit as a piano/vocal and guitar duo, and contributed a track, ’Why’, to a 2006 Kill Rock Stars compilation, The Sound The Hare Heard.
Signing to the NYC label Ba Da Bing (home to Beirut, amongst others), the pair set about recording Essie Jain’s debut album We Made This Ourselves, with percussionist Jim White (Dirty Three, Will Oldham, Nina Nastasia) adding a dash of inspiration to later sessions.
Recorded mostly in her apartment, the album is based around Jain’s piano and restrained, cool fire vocals with occasional discreet brushstrokes of brass, accordion, strings, guitar or hushed percussion.
Essie Jain will perform live in the UK this spring and summer.
COMMENTS:
- "On her enchanting debut, NYC-based English transplant Essie Jain makes a compelling argument for the merits of minimalism. " (Time Out New York)
- "[a] sophisticated blend of timeless and contemporary" (Pitchfork)
- "Essie Jain could be the Joni Mitchell of the 21st Century" (Venus)

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
