What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our BRIAN D feeling unmoved.

Now for something different entirely. A 7" from Naked And The Boys. 'If You Found Love' is a well written acoustic guitar singer songwriter tune with all the catchiness and much in the same vein as Badly Drawn Boy. This aint my bag but I can appreciate its appeal and I reckon if you're a fan of the aforementioned Springsteen lover then you'll like this 7" on Young And Lost Club. AA side 'Tralfamadore' is less catchy, like. Mingus has pointed out that it' a little on the bossanova tip. Naked & The Boys is such a gay name....

What the label says:

Naked and the Boys are the newest signing to Young and Lost Records, the indie label based in London already responsible for signing some of the hottest acts around and setting them off on the road to success.  Previous debut single releases on Y&L include, Joe Lean &The Jing Jang Jong, Johnny Flynn, Good Shoes and Noah and the Whale to name but a few.  When the girls that run Young and Lost announce a new signing you can be assured of a certain level of cool and quality and with Naked and the Boys, as always, they have cherry picked a very exciting band.

Naked and the Boys are three.  Lead singer and Guitarist Jack is from Devon, Tommy from Inverness plays double bass and George the Drummer is from Ailsbury.  So starting their formative years as far away from each other as possible they were eventually cosmically united in a supermarket near the University they both attended in London.  "I had seen Tommy around the Uni a lot lugging his bass around and thought he looked like an interesting guy. Then one day in the supermarket I was really hung over and I saw Tommy at the check out, so I went and queued next to him and started mumbling about his double bass.  We left the store and started chatting about music",  Jack recalls.  After that they started jamming together and realised they shared a similar taste in music.  Later on down the line Jack and Tommy (or Naked and the Boys, the name they chose to go by) wanted to take their sound further by introducing some more rhythm.  It was then that they came across George, having auditioned a number of crazy Gum Tree drummers they agreed the obvious choice would be the first to audition and friend of Tommy's, George, who stood out as the best, by a country mile.

‘If You Find Love’ is a well crafted song of cheery acoustic guitar lead folk. In today’s current climate of popular folk and with more non-manufactured groups dominating the charts, there is a real thirst for the kind of music Naked and the Boys are making.  They are band with a host of wonderfully different songs up their sleeves, this demonstrated by the beautiful b-side Tralfalmadore.  Jack’s reasons for writing Tralfalmadore are two fold.  Firstly, to him the word itself is a beautiful audible treat.  Secondly (for sci-fi geeks), Tralfamadore is a planet that is featured in Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegult.  It is a Planet that exists in the forth dimension and so the beings who live on it exist in the past and the future and therefore see both backwards and forwards through time, and it was this concept that Jack found so stunning he wrote the song.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
