Darkstar - Need You/ Squeeze My Lime

Need You/ Squeeze My Lime by Darkstar

Hyperdub unleash a new 12" by the under-rated Darkstar, a buddy of Zomby who I really dug the recent 12" by. 'I Need You' is a lot more 2-step garage with odd vocoder vox, a bouncy, playful bassline & some real sweet DIY synth lines. He also employs that magnificently eerie burbling alien synth noise that sounds like some sleek plasmatic creature is morphing through yr water pipes in search of your soul & will GET YOU IN THE END!!! GRAAAAAH! Flip over for the quirky AA side, 'Squeeze My Lime'. Like strange digital soul, this reminds me a little in spirit of Laurie Anderson's 'Superman' before it melts into a very odd slo-mo Garage ballad with more vocoders, abstract synths switched to harpsichord & some chittering beats from another planet. A very odd platter from this genre bending stable. persist with it as at first you'll be confused but I guarantee it'll blossom in your head given time!

After their recent flurry on the transfer market, Hyperdub unleash their latest new signing, Darkstar. On their first release for the label, Darkstar donate two slices of juicy, tingling, infectious vocoder love that will have you leaking oil everywhere. After two astounding but woefully under-rated releases on their own 2010 imprint, ‘Need You’ brings together their refined ear for a catchy melody and vocal earworm with some serious robot romance and silicon sadness. Despite still leaving us speechless, ‘Need You’ compels endless attempts at description ; UK garage meets Daft Punk meets Roger Troutman, or a hypothetical body-popping Burial releasing in 1982. Etc. Crunchy, harpsichord-like synthesized organs wrap around a descending bassline that strangely makes your jaws vibrate. Flip over for the weightier, slo-mo action of ‘Squeeze My Lime’, a lamenting, tangy synthesis of dub and hip hop from another dimension. Another totally unique release from an inventive production team fully deserving of the Hyperdub seal of freshness.
