What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Ant feeling ecstatic.

I huge load of stock has just arrived and we're falling over boxes of records and what not.. The second 12" on Hyperdub this week comes from Kode 9 and The Spaceape. 'Konfusion' has the pair in fine form with the Ape dropping his brand of lyrical science and Kode 9 going all sci-fi. As you'd expect there's the mandatory fat ass bassline with theramin style synth hovering over it like some old B-movie scene on another planet. I'd love to hear this fucker cranked up to the max. It's not a huge step forward for Kode 9 but with each release he does something slightly different. This is a little more techy and less organic sounding. Dub on the flip for full soundsystem wreckage.

What the label says:

Kode9 & The Spaceape return with their first fresh collaboration since their scene-stealing ‘Memories Of The Future’ full length back in mid 2006, and a version excursion which also serves as a prelude to their new album due later in 2008. The instrumental to ‘Konfusion’, a breezy, almost horizontally reclined groove that drops like a ton of gold bricks wrapped in silk, was produced just after the ‘Memories…’ album was completed and has spent a year and half gestating on dubplate, featuring in edited form both on Kode9’s Sonar Mix CD of last summer of 2007 and his infamous November 2007 Rinse Fm back-to-back radio show with Flying Lotus. The instrumental was recently vocaled by a chorus of cloned Spaceapes via a glitching, interstellar walkie-talkie. A warm draft from a summer to come, and frothy man like cresta lemonade (ask yr dad).

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
