Turncoat: 'Wasted On You' (Regal) First Regal 7" review for Mings this year comes immediately after the left of left missives from Social Registry. This is unfortunate as anything is going to sound pallid and kinda mainstream in comparison. Turncoat meanwhile ply their acoustic strum and junior vocals that get mangled into bombastic dirge and anthemic stadium styled theatrics. How they get from the mellow strum to that sub Sub-Pop noise at the end your guess is as good as mine.
In 2005, Sony-imprint DOUBLE DRAGON snapped the band up, and so began a hectic year
of touring [including an unforgettable appearance at GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL!]. The label then released the awesome 'AT A WINDOW' single to glowing reviews.
…But just when it looked like success might be within their grasp [NME were citing the band as a 'breathtaking mix of FOO FIGHTERS and Alt-Rock'], Turncoat retreated from the public eye to re-appraise the situation. Ever mindful to distance themselves from all things 'of the moment', the band decided instead to re-locate to the Sussex countryside, so that they might be able to write and record at their own pace.
Re-emerging in the autumn of 2006, just in time for an appearance at the revered 'Brighton Live' festival, Turncoat unleashed a clutch of sharp new songs that pointed to a much deeper and resonant sound.
So what do they actually sound like? To the first–time listener there are elements of 'Dog Man Star'-era SUEDE, early RIDE, GENE or RADIOHEAD. These create the perfect foil for the voice of their enigmatic singer, finding parity somewhere between MORRISEY and SCOTT WALKER. On the other hand, when asked about their influences, the band cite altogether more contrary selections; QUEEN, PINK FLOYD and ELO emerge alongside more modern icons like THE PIXIES, BLUR and the much-neglected TRASH CAN SINATRA'S.

This record was a bit a of a slog to get out actually, the song was written at least a year before its release - it's a shame the record label took so long getting their arse in gear, it should have made more of an impact. You did enjoy our previous single - At a window - so we were halfway there! How many copies do you have left? Can you do us a bulk order price if you want them shifted? We have an album we are putting out this march. We would love you to stock it, we have no record label but we could offer you exclusivity for online physical sales.what do you say? Many thanks,Chaz Newman
