Very 'Postcard Records' by Wake The President. The Kingfishers put a good spin on 'Make Me Sad' - pleasant listening all round.

What the label says:

Hamburg’s Aufgeladen und Beriet label has been building a steady reputation for releasing innovative new music from Scotland. Releases on colour – vinyl 7” thus far have included releases by artists as diverse as Future Pilot AKA vs Damo Suzuki, Say, the Sexual Objects, Found, among others. The Kingfishers’ debut release is a cover version of Vic Godard’s Make Me Sad. A melancholic yet uplifting pop song written by the best writer of his generation, Make Me Sad highlights the vocal talents of Sam Martin whose poignant reading of the song has already received praise from Vic Godard himself. Following the tradition of Belle and Sebastian, with a visceral thump of Arab Strap, Wake The President is the latest innovative group to be released on the award-winning student-run Glasgow label, Stow College’s Electric Honey Records. Wake the President have recently been tipped by MOJO as a modern independent group to keep an eye on, which follows on from their previous single  “Remember Fun?” being Record of the Week on BBC Radio 2. “You Can’t Change That Boy” is the third 7” single by Wake the President. Formed at Glasgow University in the summer of 2005 by identical twins Erik and Bjorn Sandberg, the band have built up a strong  live  following. They draw their influences from a variety of sources, with the Postcard - era GoBetweens / Aztec Camera unashamedly seeping through in their diverse harmonies and melodies. This is allied to Erik’s lyrics, which are a bit of a conundrum... West End debauchery and deceit seem to be a recurring subject, along with Jerome novels, infidelity and dipsomnia. Whilst Bjorn’s guitar is very much influenced by Orange Juice’s James Kirk and Felt’s Maurice Deebank. Wake the President’s music encapsulates and portrays the beauty of a city which has been in desperate need for reflection, in a manner not dissimilar to another one of their influences, The Smiths.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
