In 2007, Reverend and The Makers achieved gold status with their top five album ‘The State Of Things’, three hit singles (including the ubiquitous ‘Heavyweight Champion Of The World’), an almost constant presence on UK television, sell out tours, festivals appearances and now here they are in 2008, bright eyed and still on a mission. A remix concept should come as no surprise to R&TM fans with Jon’s love of dance music being well known and his forays into DJing as Reverend Soundsystem being legendary since the club residency of the same name in Sheffield, where the band started on the road to success.
With the album tracks originally produced by the legendary Jagz Kooner, it’s little wonder they lend themselves so readily to the remix treatment. On the 7” Dubmeister Adrian Sherwood takes ‘Sundown On The Empire’ and lovingly renders a perfect roots-reggae vibe with Jon’s vocal melodies completely intact, while on the B-side the dub does as it say’s on the tin, without vox. On the 12” Elektrons are in majestic form, taking the sardonic lyrics of ‘18-30’, splicing them with their trademark floor friendly twists, and banging the butt out of the original. ‘The Machine’ gets a full-on, dayglo Infadels reworking into a jacking peak time tweaker with a mad breakdown and old school analogues ricocheting from the outset.
