What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

The ever prolific Machinefabriek has a new album out. This one is a collaboration with Freiband (Frans De Waard) on Gareth Hardwick's Low Point label. It's called 'Oahu' and it's an interesting beast. It starts off with a short 90 second segement of improvised lapsteel which is all bluesy and that. Then you get 2 tracks of delicious atmospherics, drones and tones all created from that original track. The tracks were bounced back from the 2 artists who ceated 30 second segements and they arsed about with 'em all until they were happy and had come to a point where they felt their work was done. We're left this stunning album of experimental electronics which will keep you immersed in it's good self for the duration. I reckon this is a proper headphones album. Well tasty!

What the label says:

‘Oahu’ is a collaborative release between Dutch sound artists Freiband (the latest project of Frans de Waard, founder of the Korm Plastics label and member of Kapotte Muziek, Beequeen and Goem to name but three) and Machinefabriek (the prolific Rutger Zuydervelt).

The genesis of the project was a 90 second recording of improvised acoustic lapsteel (the Oahu of the title) played by Martin Luiten.  From this initial recording, segments of music, each lasting 30 seconds in length, were created then passed back and forth between de Waard and Zuydervelt over a period of four months for further processing, editing and refinement.  Finally, with a collection of 20 of these segments, each artist composed their own 20 minute mix using these pieces.

Though the nature of processing and reprocessing applied to the initial recording of the lapsteel makes it at times almost unrecognisable, the harmonic and melodic essence of the instrument is retained and utilised throughout.  And whilst unified by the source material at their disposal, these two tracks have a distinct feel and identity that manage to perfectly encapsulate the work of both artists.

Cd packaged in a matt printed digipak case. Ltd edition of 450 copies.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
