What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

The Black Dog are back on Soma following up the 'Flood' EP with the 'Set To Receive' 12". A 3 track EP which kicks off beautifully with a creepy electro beat and wobbly Skream-esqe bassline. The overall mood is on the darker side with some really sweet synths. Not bad at all. 'EVP Echoes' heads into futuristic neo electro territory and wouldn't be out of place on Satamile or SCSI until Ken Downey's trademark melodic synths creep in. The EP ends with a live cut of 4/4 detroit inspired goodness. Although I do like some of the recent Black Dog stuff you cant help but feel they're just using the name now to sell records as they're on 1/3 the original line-up.

What the label says:

The Black Dog drop a throbbing slice of spooked out techno as they prepare for the long-awaited album, ‘Radio Scarecrow’.
Following on from 2006’s ‘Riphead v9’ and the recent ‘Floods’ EP which included an incredible remix from Surgeon, The Black Dog continue going from strength to strength.   ‘Set To Receive’ is the third single to be taken from The Black Dog’s long-awaited new album ‘Radio Scarecrow’.
With its addictive warbling bassline hook and sparkling melodies ‘Set To Receive’ will freak you out.
‘EVP Echoes’ is an irascible, snappy cut that aims straight for the jugular. Heavily influenced by Electronic Voice Phenomenon the group have created a distressing piece of work using incidents of the phenomenon.    ‘Shortwave Lies’ creeps up on you slowly beginning with little more than some hi-hats and intermittent thick bass. The track soon jacks it up, hitting it four to floor and building the groove. This is a fiendish track that will have you moving.

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
