What we say

Rating: ecstatic This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.

Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.... these chocodiles Haley... These chocodiles. Anyway PJ Harvey has excelled herself this week by just releasing the best thing I've heard from her in donkeys years. 'The Devil' is a brilliant pop song with its guts mainly being a miserable yet bizarrely uplifting piano, which is ably supported by a 60's-esque beat with tambourines and that. It's well moody and someone piped up she's like a female Nick Cave.... which is probably quite true. If only he'd shave his filthy cornflake ridden tash off. This is the best tune she's done since 'Good Fortune'. I remember seeing her when 'Dry' came out at the Duchess in Leeds and I'm delighted to see she can still cut the cheese (cheap gag... should have been cut the mustard but why you'd want to cut something that slops freely from jars is a mystery to me ) Bring it on Polly. Phil x

What the label says:

The Devil, a third single from PJ Harvey’s album White Chalk, will be released on March 17th through Island Records in the UK.

Available on download, 7” and CD single, The Devil will be backed with the previously unreleased Liverpool Tide, which was recorded in 1998.
White Chalk “…the most beautiful and ethereal collection of songs you’ll hear all year” (NME) featured highly in end of year polls around the world.

PJ Harvey was recently nominated for a Brit Award for Best Female Solo Artist and is currently on tour in New Zealand and Australia (including a sold out show in the Sydney Opera House), and is scheduled to play dates in Italy, Germany and Poland over the coming months.

Harvey is also working with White Chalk co-producer John Parish on a follow up to 1996’s collaborative album Dance Hall At Louse Point.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
