This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Pleasantly baffled by the debut Neon Neon album. Had no clue that this was the mooted collaboration between Gruff Rhys & Boom Bip, a spectacular concept album about the rags to riches to rags true story of John DeLorean (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_De_Lorean) Some of this initially got on my tits as the blatant 80s isms whiffed of trendy post Hot Chip synth pop cash in. Can't believe the Welsh ragamuffin has finally left the 70s to be honest. Some of this seems like a homage to Miami Vice, stylish mid 80s brat pack romances & ephemera of that ilk. In it's favor i'll happily state the tunes on 'Stainless Style' (De Loren's unique selling point was his cars were made of Stainless Steel so didn't rust!) get right under your skin. Some proper highlighted mullet & Italian hand stitched loafer moments here but the choruses just shine like stars. Also they squirrel influences away that include everything between Erasure, Miami bass & classy Italo disco as well as a couple of blinding electro pop moments. Yes I wanna detest this album's retro futurist stance, but sadly, my beef is short lived as there's a lot of love, talent & pop nous gone into this fresh & eclectic opus. Bet it could flatten those Hot Chip fellas at their own game too!

What their label says...

Boom Bip and Gruff Rhys present Neon Neon
Neon Neon’s debut album ‘Stainless Style’ is a highly imaginative slice of conceptual power-pop inspired by the incredible life of playboy automobile impresario, John DeLorean (the maker of the car in ‘Back To The Future’ / busted for cocaine dealing / burnt down his factory / dated Raquel Welsh amongst other supermodels).
On ‘Stainless Style’ Super Furry Animals front man and solo star Gruff Rhys and LA based producer Boom Bip unite pop, electro, rock, crunk, hip-hop and italo disco, whilst exploring a range of subjects and events relevant to DeLorean’s life.   Album guests include Spank Rock, Yo Majesty, Har Mar Superstar, Fab from The Strokes, Magic Numbers, Fat Lip and more.
 “Terrific - 4/5” – Q Magazine; “Sleek, nostalgic pop fantasy – 4/5” - Uncut.
Follows the two sold out, limited 12” picture disc releases ‘Raquel’ and ‘Trick For Treat’ featuring Spank Rock and the preceding single ‘I Lust U’.   Neon Neon play live at Fabric in March, with band members including Fab, Har Mar Superstar and Fat Lip.
