What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Ant feeling happy.

Next in my lugs is a CD from Sweden's Surrounded on One Little Indian. 'The Nautilus Years' begins with a big metallic beat with a ton of reverb then weeping strings and a slightly tortured but tender and fragile vocal. A sad song but as the album progresses there is hope and it becomes more poppy and uplifting at times. It's all very dramatic and sentimentel. Well produced by the band too. Not really my thing but for this kind of stuff its really well done. The vocals have been compared to Sparklehorse and Wilco and the music to The Radio Dept.

What the label says:

Born out of a yearlong recording session deep in Sweden’s forests eight years ago, Surrounded received glowing press for their debut album ‘Safety In Numbers’. Now signed to One Little Indian with superb new album ‘The Nautilus Years’ set for release in March, a brief tour is also planned to coincide with this.

The fuzzy euphoria of songs like ‘Safe Tomorrow Sun’ and ‘Paper Tangerine Crush’ recalls the sonic thrill of My Bloody Valentine or fellow Swedes The Radio Dept., while Rydell’s delivery on the more plaintive numbers (such as haunting ‘The Oceanographer’) evokes cult American singers Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) or Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse). ‘Easy Piranhas’ is discordant and bitter while ‘Swimming To Galapagos’ is a graceful, stately closer. Recorded and produced by the band themselves over a long, painstaking year, the craftsmanship and fervour at the heart of this album is evident for all to see. It is a rare, important and ambitious work: at once out of step with our modern world and exactly the tonic it needs.

Influenced as much by the forerunners of America’s alt-country scene as Sweden’s rich musical heritage, after years of poorly promoted tours and label frustrations the current line-up of Surrounded are a formidable unit: comprising Marten Rydell (vocals, guitar), Marcus Knutsson (guitar), Tom Malmros (bass), Johannes Linder (drums) and Erik Gustafsson (keys), the band are fiercely proud of ‘The Nautilus Years’ – “we wouldn’t change a thing,” says Rydell with admirable conviction.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.
