Reissue. With a glittery mix of jangly guitars, bossa nova and sophisticated, melancholic pop melodies, ”The Friend I Once Had” was a big step forwards for Club 8. Their debut album ”Nouvelle” may be regarded, as a twee pop classic by some but the band would happily rather bury most the songs under a rock. This is the album they wish was their debut. “All bubble-pop, break beats, and xylophones, Friend I Once Had was a step forward from the fey gestures Club 8 had once been known for.” ALL MUSIC GUIDE "...showcases lusher, bouncier songs suitable for both easy listening and sophisticated grooving .... music that you will immediately cherish..." CMJ “It is absolutely essential to own at least one Lp by this group. I'd probably suggest this one as the place to start, but you really can't go wrong.” 10 + INDIESPINZONE ”The friend I once had” was not only a first step towards the band’s characteristically elegant, yet melancholic, ”Club 8 - sound”; it was a step towards a much bigger (and possibly wider) audience. The album gained critical success and reached thousands of new listeners in the US, Europe and Japan and they even had a minor hit with the single ”Missing you”. Ironically, this is the only song from the album parts of the band can no longer stand. ”The Friend I Once Had” celebrates 10 years and remains a minor Swedish pop classic. A must have for just about anyone genuinely interested in quality POP.
