What the label says:DJ Shadow is widely credited as a key figure in developing the experimental instrumental hip hop style. His early projects were all-over-the-map mini-masterpieces combining elements of funk, rock, hip hop, ambient, jazz, soul, and used-bin incidentalia. Though his music is hard to categorize, his early contributions were certainly important as an alternative to the voice of hip hop and gangster rap, scenes that never accepted him. He cited early rap pioneers as influences on his sample-based sound, further claiming that "lyrics ...were confining, too specific". His music rarely features more than short clips of voices or vocal work. DJ Shadow’s ‘Essential Mix’ is a live BBC Radio broadcast showcasing his endless random rap crates blended with breaks and exclusive freestyles.
