What we say about Executive Timber, by Yellotone
This record left our Ant feeling happy.
We got a new CD by Yellotone entitled 'Executive Timber'. You may remember this guy (Simon Harding) having stuff out on Ai Records a bit ago. He's got a bit of a band together now and is singing and everything and it really is great that he is because he's a very talented guy. Brian pipes up and says that this has a New Zealand feel to it with bits of The Chills in there. Phil is occasionaly reminded of New Order. This is guitar based indie music with integrity, imagination and soul. The traces of his electronic music his remain and provide a cool dynamic.Very good indeed.
What the label says about Executive Timber, by Yellotone:
A more live, garage-rock and country-tinged sound is a fine evolution from Simon Harding’s 2004
laptop album Tar File Junction, which achieved airtime with John Peel, Mary Ann Hobbs, and Nick
Luscombe. Something of a mini-masterpiece, Executive Timber describes addictive homeprogrammed
guitar anthems fed with a warmer live bass, and louder drum sounds than previous
releases. His trademark clattery experimentation remains, but now vocals – sometimes eerie –
pervade the record.
A favourite of mine, Built to Laszt, is an immediate classic of programmed indie-rock, which touches
all the right buttons, while Rye Road is a swaggering, brassy, countrified gem, and Rons Lost His
Mind is a beautifully executed, personal pop tune, with that now instantly recognisable Yellotone
sound.
With his ever-growing repertoire of instrumentation, fertile programming from his burgeoning library of
homemade live samples, and his band, The Attorneys, Harding has conjured enviable responses at
his live London shows and is now sure to make some noise with this record.
Weaving his own sonic yarn since ‘98, Simon signed to London’s Ai imprint in 2001, and has since
been building an exciting catalogue of new material which he plans to unleash upon the public in due
course. He has also composed soundtracks for documentaries on Channel 4, ITV London and the
BBC. Earmarked for CD release in January 2008 on his own Kissmymintcondition label, this is a
magical, gorgeous steal of a record. A UK tour will follow.
