Autechre: 'Quaristice' (Warp)
I've been excited by the event that is the new Ae album since just about when 'Untilted' started to make sense to me. Well at least until the electronic engineering began to fuse something inside my brain...that something remains as unfathomable as attempting to describe what Ae mean to the larger music community. Something inside my head tells me it's the sound of technology working right -or wrong. That Ae are considered top of the list of pioneering audio engineers. They seem to combine, through constant experimentation, all the best elements of contemporary sound art; microtones/textures; drones/tones and gamelan sounds. Particularly on this their ninth offering, they cut a flow of short-ish tracks that combines the aforementioned approaches with their love of hip hop: there's some barmy use of vocals as ever; techno and electro; there's shouts of "slowed down Drexciya" in the office. So what do we get for our money. Well the track listing is a different order to the mp3 version. The sound is crisper and clearer. I've yet to hear the vinyl version - there's sure to be a different quality to it again. Suffice to say that the reasons I like Autechre are many and varied. I like the way they always seem to push the boundaries of what they and their audience expect. The fusion of all the many strands of electronic music are mangled and stretched beyond comprehension and back. Leaving the mind/body torn between logic and possibilty. It's not at all difficult to digest, in fact on repeated listens it just seems, like a lot of their previous work,to make more and more sense. Not a release, more a series of sonic events.
