What we say
This record left our Ant feeling happy.
UK techno stalwarts are Mike Golding and Steve Rutter B12 are back on the case with a fairly solid EP of detroit inspired melodic techno. '32 Lineup' is floor friendly 4/4 gear which is more minimal than their artificial Intelligence/ Warp period. The groove is reasonably infectious and would surely do the business accompanied by a strobe light and dry ice smoke. 'Omni Therapy' explores darker terrain with its sinister, paranoid futuristic sounds. 'Ashamed Of Me' is a more experimental piece. Again this is futuristic techno with melody but just falls short. The thing with these guys is that they're so highly revered they're new tracks are gonna constantly be compared with their early tracks which will win every time. Be quick if you want the Ltd coloured vinyl.
What the label says:
TRACKLISTING: A1: 32 LINEUP B1: OMNI THERAPY B2: ASHAMED OF ME
After a very successful label re-launch that unleashed a new EP from Kirk Degiorgio, B12 proved they were well & truly back at the forefront of British techno. This time B12 themselves take over the controls for this next release and the ‘32 Lineup EP’.
B12 are Mike Golding and Steve Rutter, who launched their eponymous named label back in 1990 and were originally mistaken as hailing from Detroit, because their sound fused together so many of the elements that were seeping out of the Motor City. Releasing under a series of monikers, such as Redcell, Cmetric, and Musicology, it was also at this time that they forged their long term working relationship with Kirk Degiorgio and enjoyed many releases on his A.R.T. label. It wasn’t long before the mighty Warp took notice and the boys went on to release a B12 EP and two albums for the Brit independent. Then in 1996, with test pressings of B1215 in their hands, they disappeared without reason and B1215 never made it to the record store shelves.
Then in 2005 after a sell out live show in London, and hearing of the illegal and poor quality bootlegs of their old material doing the rounds, the boys decided to re-hoist the B12 flag and not only promised to re-master those original classics but also return with a host of brand new material.
And so we have the ‘32 Lineup EP’. The title track which kicks off the A side was first devised for their live shows, but has now been transformed into a layered techno track that supplies just the right beats and rhythms to move even the laziest of feet. Flip over to the B side for ‘Omni Therapy’ and the perfect antidote to a big night out, providing therapy for those aching feet and active minds. Completing the EP ‘Ashamed of Me’ combines the classic B12 sounds into a warm and moody, yet hard tinged number that innovates while retaining a familiar feel.
The B12 mission to provide electronic music for listening and dancing has not changed, as this latest EP proves. |
