What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

Haven't reviewed anything from over in Malaysia before I don't think. 'Windvane & Window' is a lush CD of twinkly, hazy, sun & paradise electronica by Flica who is most definitely schooled in the Post Arovane 'Tides' college of thought. The beats sound like Fizzarum at one point but the overall sheen couldn't be less Icy Russian if it tried. Warm & lazy with plenty of gently relaxing samples, rolling piano segments, breezy vocal snippets & spanish guitar effects. I could see this on Morr a few years ago, a tribute to the early Noughties electronica scene that glows with positively! For fans of Isan, Flau, Schole etc... includes an Akira Kosemura mix!

What the label says:

Take the scent of a Sunday morning air, add a touch of an after-rain breeze, multiply it by the silent beauty of a couple of seashore sunset but removed the over-powering awe that surrounds it, and add a pinch of urban avant-garde grandeur, you’d be somewhere close to flica.

windvane and window captures flica’s impeccable ability to balance simple playful musical creativity with subtle, honest emotional depths, combining youthful pop sensibilities with matured artistry.

Thin layers of ethereal sounds create the ambience, helmed by easy-tripping electro acoustic tunes and grounded by sleek IDM rhythms; each number intricately weaves a subtle beauty that works its way to a refrained but magically spell-binding crescendo softly fluctuating to the sweetest and truest human touches.

flica’s debut album is not one of extremities, but a collection of skillfully controlled heart-felt expressions, creating a sense of serenity that bridges dreams with reality.

In this gorgeous album, besides showcasing the stunning vocals by Malaysian singer-songwriter Ika, it also features collaborative efforts with famed Tokyo indie label mastermind Akira Kosemura and talented electro-acoustic musician Haruka Nakamura. As a final magical touch, windvane and window is beautifully mastered by our dear friend, ricks ang, who is also one half of the splendid Singapore electronic ambient duo, aspidistrafly.

flica is seasoned Malaysian musician Euseng Seto’s personal music project. Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he has embarked on his own musical exploration after years of experimentation with different musical forms.

About the humble CD:

The CD is essentially a small portable face mirror which has an extra feature of being able to play music (through a thing known as a CD player). These CD's are a modern invention hence them being all shiny and digital. They can hold about 80 minutes of music and apparently are indestructible as you can smear jam on them and they still play (not as nourishing as toast mind you but when you're hungry.....). They sound crystal clear and are tiny convenient things. They lack the charm and warmth of their old analogue counterparts but their portability, convenience and ease of being duplicated make them a perfect thing of a thing for most folks. Jewel cases are the worst thing ever though and they really need to stop.

'I like pies and stuff.'
